Google I/O 2018 AnnouncementYesterday was Day 1 of Google I/O 2018, and they made a really big announcement with the future advancements of the Google Assistant. It will soon be making calls for you.
The technology is called Google Duplex, and it is hard to believe, but the people receiving the calls had no idea it was an AI making the phone call.
Watch the Google Assistant Make CallsGoogle CEO Sundar Pichai at Google I/O 2018 with a Demo of Google Assistant Making Calls.
UsageThe announcement demo gave the examples of booking a haircut, and making a restaurant reservation, and these are the types of calls your Google Assistant will be making. But, there was one other use that I really appreciated...
The assistant will also make calls on behalf on Google to check details on business open hours. Personally, I would appreciate this because I often see business hours, and question them on public holidays. This would save the business many calls, and save the customers making many calls.
When Can Google Make My Calls?Well, there was no release date mentioned. All they said, was that they have been working on this for many years, and that they were still under development.
However, given the current competitive climate surrounding digital assistants and home automation, I couldn't image this will be too far away.
